Exactly to the date, five years ago – I wrote an article in honor of Bea Wains 95th birthday. You can read that one here:
https://stianeriksen.com/2012/04/30/bea-wain-happy-95th-birthday/
Most of what’s in that piece is still relevant, except that Bea herself now, today turns 100 years old. Her daughter has told me that she is in good shape and that they will actually celebrate her centennial.
Bea Wain is one of the great singers of our time, and I am sorry she did not keep on recording for a much longer time. This video of a 66-year old Bea (in 1983), clearly shows that she still had her voice, charm and looks intact:
The 1930’s truly was a golden decade for vocalists, and a lot of the guys & girls who started recording back then, have left us awesome legacies of great music. Not many are still around though; Vera Lynn turned 100 in March (and released a new album!), most of the others are gone by now, one of the most recent being Kay Starr who died last November at the age of 94.
I bow my head in admiration for Bea’s 100th birthday today – and I certainly bow again, for her totally wonderful contribution to the world of song. Any young singer out there who wants to learn all about phrasing, breath control, involving yourself in the lyrics you sing or how to make each performance unique; all you need to do is listen to Bea Wain – ’cause she’s the best! There will never be another one like her, and for ages to come she will stand as the perfect template to any and all singers of popular music!
Dear Bea: Wishing you the very best for your birthday and the days to come! With much love and admiration from your biggest fan in Norway. Mwah!!

It is so wonderful to share in the birthday celebration of the fabulous Bea Wain! Today, her glorious voice will prevail in my home in tribute. I remember watching JUKEBOX SATURDAY NIGHT back in 1983. It was one of the first things I recorded on my Beta VCR! That tape and machine are long gone now, but a man in Canada made me a dvd of ECHOES OF THE BIG BAND, which includes several songs that Bea did on that earlier show.

Hi Scott!
I hope you played Bea Wain records until the foundations of your house were rocking! Some clips from Jukebox Saturday Night is on YouTube, so you may enjoy them again there.
Pity you lost the tapes – it is now possible to make DVDs of old tapes. Here in Norway we have companies specializing in that, and they are not expensive either.
Thanks for writing in!
Best wishes, Stian

I have been looking forward to April 30 for some time now, knowing Bea is 100 years old. I think it’s the best thing that she is still doing well and I hope there are a bunch more birthdays still left that she can share with us! I hope she is happy and enjoying every moment! Bea, you are so special, you are still loved by many!

After checking this page and updates of Bea Wain, for a couple of years, I must comment.
I remember as a small boy in the 1950s sitting in my grandmother’s lap while she patted my hand and hummed Heart and Soul. When I was older I found Bea Wain in my father’s record albums. I fell in love with Bea Wain. Now as a grandfather I have introduced Bea Wain to my too young yet to understand or appreciate granddaughter and grandson. Someday they will.
Thank you many times over. The world is a better place knowing she is ok.
May 22, 2017 @ 06:55:58
Hi Rich!
Thanks for sharing that wonderful memory! Your grandmothers taste in music has obviously been passed on down through the generations. If your granddaughter grows up to enjoy great music, I am sure she will appreciate Bea Wain as well.
Bea celebrated her 100th birthday at the end of April, so yes – she is still OK.
Best wishes, Stian

Great to read all the comments re Bea Wain…well done Stian for sending the messages on. Can anyone confirm if DEANE JANIS is still alive…she recorded with HAL KEMP in 1933 and appeared in several 1930’s movies as a singer.

Stain, I would love to make a donation for a billboard or a sign in the Los Angeles area.
recognizing Bea Wain . We are so fortunate to have her around. Her music is amazing! I was hoping maybe someone in the music and or entertainment business would recognize her with a lifetime achievement award!! There will never be such a person has her!!!! And yes I would give anything to meet her and tell her what her songs mean to people throughout the entire world!!! Sincerely, Marc Zavala
Jul 29, 2017 @ 08:57:24
Hi Marc! I love your idea, and I most certainly support it. Adress your question to the LA authorities, I am sure they can help you out! Bea is a most deserving lifetime achievement recipient, so that is a job for the Grammy commitee! If you are in the area where she lives, I am sure she would be happy to see you – bring the biggest bouquet of roses ever, haha!
Best wishes, Stian

Stian, I will do that.. I am in the downtown Los Angeles area. I will keep you informed…lets see what happens!!!! Marc Z

Thanks for putting this on. I’ve loved Bea since I heard her early recordings with the Larry Clinton Orchestra, “My Reverie” still blows me away. I’m mostly a Blues guy but good music, is good music and the American Songbook stuff from that era is as good as it gets.
Aug 06, 2017 @ 08:52:49
Hi Jerry! I agree, her records with Larry Clinton are great, and “My Reverie” is a classic. I see no conflict in being a blues guy, and liking Bea Wain. Blues is all about feeling, and Bea sang with a lot of feeling. She was also one of the first white singers to have a true feeling for the blues, and could sing that kind of music just as effortlessly as any popular hit song of the day.
Best wishes, Stian
